This is a very late post, but anyway... I am STILL pulling my hair out in despair making my pppoe connection working with a (pre-compiled) Mandrake kernel... when I switch my boot kernel to the latest 2.4.X one (2.4.22.26 for Mandrake) it connects instantly, without a snip (and yes, before trying to connect with 2.6.X kernel I had wiped all the ppp configuration files...). Maybe an ethernet modem is just too easy to setup for the new kernel? 
Next try will be trying to compile a 2.6.X kernel myself out of the Mandrake source RPM... who knows, I might have more luck with it.
